Discover Nine Extraordinary Castles of England pt. 2

Written By Ashley Switzer, Travel Advisor

Continuing on from last week, Ashley has more to share!

“Castle Connoisseur”… that’s what I like to call myself! During my time living in England, I’ve visited over 70 historical locations (so far) and can confidently say I have seen some of the most beautiful landmarks in the world.

Read on to discover a few of the ones I’ve enjoyed the most!

#6 - Tintagel Castle

Tintagel has the most dramatic landscape of any castle I’ve visited! Although it is mostly ruins now, the dramatic cliffs paint a beautiful scene. In fact, Tintagel has rumored to be the birthplace of the mythical King Arthur. This castle features an amazing swinging bridge to access it, and is set along the most beautiful beach in England.

#7 - Windsor Castle

As the home of the Queen, this castle must be on this list! The Castle features beautiful interiors and allows a small glimpse into what a current royal residence is like. I’ve visited this one twice and it was amazing both times! My favorite part- the room with all the coat of arms. So much amazing history!

#8 - Warwick Castle

Okay, this one makes the list for a different reason. Although not one of my personal favorites, it is great for families with children! This castle offers a lot in the way of entertainment for the whole family. Jousting shows, special areas for the kids, and a gorgeous landscape contribute to a great place for visitors when exploring Europe. However, while the castle has remained authentic in part, there are areas that have been modified to make it more family-friendly. This take a bit of the authenticity away, but makes it a great day out for the little explorers.

# 9 - Framlinham

Ed Sheeran made this one famous with his hit, “Castle on a Hill.” It’s a pretty castle in an interesting, slightly hilly, landscape. The castle is a great day out on a sunny day. Although it is mostly ruins, it sits is a quant little town and is perfectly dreamy.

Ashley Switzer, Travel Advisor

Ashley is a native of rural Georgia, where her interests in British and Early American history began at a young age.

In 2014, she married her husband, Andrew. His military career meant they could travel the world together, exploring off-the-beaten path locations. In 2019, those hopes came to fruition when Andrew received orders to the United Kingdom. It was a dream come true for the both of them, as they packed their belongings, pups, and prepared a long list of must-see locations.

Despite the challenges of 2020, Ashley and Andrew have had the opportunity to venture to every corner of the United Kingdom. The adventures they've experienced together have inspired Ashley to help others achieve their dreams of exploring British culture, and aid other young couples in the experience of a lifetime. Ashley completed her Master's in Communication degree in 2019, currently has three rescue dogs, and enjoys advocating for international animal rescue. Ashley is currently on a mission to see as many historical locations as possible in the United Kingdom, specifically castles.
