My Sojourney Story: Darlene Aumer

My Sojourney Story: Darlene Aumer

Tell us a bit about yourself. Why did you become a travel advisor?

When my boss of 25+ years retired, I decided that I wanted to explore something new. A good friend of mine recommended that I talk with Lori Stephens, owner of Sojourney Travel, since she knows how much I love to travel and plan and thought this would be a good fit for me. I cannot thank Holly enough! It's been wonderful!!!

What do you enjoy most about being a travel advisor?

My favorite thing to do is travel, but I get so much joy from planning and researching. I suppose I am a dreamer. A very close second...bringing my dreams to others. I love helping other people. A saying that resonated with me is, "I want to die with a lot of memories, not a lot of dreams." As I've gotten older and my responsibilities have shifted, I think of that saying often. It moves me. I recently helped a friend plan an international dream trip. She wanted to go so badly but was apprehensive and scared. I took care of everything for her. She is now on that trip and is having the time of her life. I know this because she sent me a message via WhatsApp (she had no idea what WhatsApp is, but I got her set up and we sent messages back and forth before she left). :) Her joy brings me joy.

What destinations do you specialize in, and what draws you to those particular places?

I specialize in international travel. I am drawn to other cultures, and I feel like many people are less comfortable and less confident about traveling internationally so this is where I am needed.

Is there a moment from your travels that has impacted the way you approach travel advising?

Initially I over-structured my trips. I have found a great balance is over-planning (there is no such thing as over-planning) and under-delivering...or living in the moment. When I travel somewhere, my goal isn't to see everything, it is to enjoy. I make sure my "must-do's" are factored into my planning, but then I have a loose plan. You never know where the day will take you and it's those unexpected adventures that are so memorable.

What advice would you give to travelers looking to plan their next vacation?

Seek the advice of a travel agent. You don't pay them, and they have a wealth of knowledge, so what do you have to lose?

What do you enjoy most about working with clients to plan their trips?

I love helping people with the areas they struggle with the most. Everyone is different. Some people feel overwhelmed and cannot even choose where to go. Some people worry about language barriers or driving in other countries. Like everything else, the more you know, the more comfortable you are. I like to help my clients step outside their comfort zone. The reward...hearing all about their trip when they return!

Can you share a memorable travel experience or a unique destination that left a lasting impression on you?

All of my international travel has touched me one way or another. Sometimes, it's all about the destination...sometimes, it's about the people. I've been blessed with so many amazing experiences. Here are some highlights: (i) Thailand with Tram from Mooi Travel (we still keep in touch); (ii) London & Paris (I could write an entire blog on this trip as I loved it so much, but what struck me the most was all the parks and unlike Americans who are constantly on the go (myself included - I'm working on that), the pace in London & Paris is slower...I would say that they "savor" their moments; (iii) as far as Italy goes...my stay at Borgo San Luigi in Tuscany, getting lost in Venice, dinner at Rist Taverna Le Coppell in Rome with our good friends, Lauri & Jeff and a wine tasting and vineyard dinner at Tenuta Torciano (thank you, Virginia & Kiara & Lorenzo); (iii) the people of Turkey - I will never forget your kindness and hospitality!

What destinations or experiences are on your personal travel bucket list?

I am personally striving to go to places that are not "tourist heavy." I want to go off the beaten path and explore/experience areas that are not commercialized. I want to have authentic experiences so I shall keep my personal bucket list to myself...at least until I've travelled to these amazing places. Stay tuned.

What is a fun fact about you that your clients may not know?

When I was in my 20's I used to skydive. I'm not that exciting any more. Other than travel (my favorite pastime), I'm pretty basic...I love spending time with my family, I love cats (especially my beloved "Pepper") and I love to read.
