Tuscan Bliss: Discovering Authentic Italy at Borgo San Luigi | Sojourney Travel by Darlene Aumer

For this year’s vacation, my husband and I and a couple of close friends spent 10 fabulous nights in Italy.  We started our trip in Rome and finished in Venice with the bulk of our stay in Tuscany.  Each destination certainly had something special to offer, but I find myself more often wanting to get away from the crowds and seek a more authentic experience.  The highlight for me was my stay at Borgo San Luigi in Tuscany.

Borgo San Luigi is the perfect home away from home amongst rolling hills, medieval towns and rows upon rows of vineyards sprinkled with poppies.  Whether you visit for a long weekend or stay several weeks, you’ll find good food, excellent service and a relaxing environment in a central, but tucked-away location.  Spend your days relaxing, playing tennis, traversing the nearby Via Francigena or frolicking in its fabulous pool. There are also several activities the staff of Borgo San Luigi can arrange for you including e-bike rentals, a hot air balloon ride, dinner in the vines, or a cooking class at its sister property, Hotel Certosa di Maggiano, just to name a few.

If you choose to venture off property, there are several towns nearby to explore where you can meander down cobblestone streets, visit a church or browse shops selling local fare.  Wind down your day by soaking up the magnificent views and take in the culture of the locals while sipping an aperitif in one of its cafes.

Centrally located, we treated Borgo San Luigi as our Tuscany base (you definitely need a car to stay here).  We visited the nearby towns of Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Montepulciano and Florence and took a day trip to Cinque Terre.  Each location was special for different reasons. One of my favorite evenings was a trip to Tenuta Torciano for dinner in the vines with wine and olive oil tastings...truly, an amazing experience! My husband is a huge “football” fan, so our evening in Florence watching the Fiorentino game was a highlight for him (thank you to Gianluca at Borgo San Luigi for scoring tickets for us!).

Regardless of how you spend your time in Tuscany, Borgo San Luigi is the perfect place to escape the crowds and disconnect and Fall would be a wonderful time to visit. Ready to go? Reach out to one of our experts to plan your dream getaway!
